Andrea Gail - @Home@Sea

As seen on MSNBCs news special called "MSNBC PRIMETIME PRESENTS: Perfect Storm"

The photographer, Les Nagy, a former Longliner Commercial Fisherman, took the photo in 1988 while fishing on the Grand Banks; 1200 miles east of Boston off the coast of Nova Scotia. On the Grand Banks it is commonplace for boats to help each other out with gear, fuel, tools, supplies, etc... When the photo was taken, the Andrea Gail had just come alongside and borrowed light stick lures from the F/V High Stakes; the boat that the photographer was working on at the time. The image was recorded as the Andrea Gail pulled away.  On a clear blue day in the late summer sun, her hull freshly painted, one sees her crew waving in appreciation for the borrowed gear. Such a contrast to what lay await for this vessel and her crew of six fisherman only three years later. This photo was first seen publicly on the "Perfect Storm Foundation"

The Perfect Storm Foundation

web site during the summer of 2000; donated by the photographer. The web site was started by Sebastian Junger to help raise funds for fishing families in Gloucester. The actual photographic print is very clear and distinct displaying her name and numbers. Also visible, but not easily distinguishable, are 3 members of the ill fated crew.

This image of the Andrea Gail is ©Les Nagy and ®Registered with the United States Library of Congress in 2000. This image or any image on this site are the sole property of Les Nagy. Unlawful copying of images by any means are strictly prohibited.

The Wreck of the Andrea Gail - Three days of a Perfect Storm

The above is the Cover Illustration of Rosen Publications NY,NY 2003 release. Rosen wanted to use the best photo of the "real" Andrea Gail to illustrate their durable library bound book cover. The above link goes directly to their website where the book can be purchased. Rosen publishes books for educational purposes for use in the public school system throughout the US. The book itself is well written by author Gillian Houghton and full of factual information in regards to the Andrea Gails demise. I am honored that Rosen Publications chose this image to "Grace" the books cover. If you decide to purchase a book from Rosen Publications website, please mention where you saw the book and how to purchase it. That would be much appreciated

***NEW*** never before seen, Rare Images of the Andrea Gail and her winter crew Feb. 1991. All photos by Bob Baker have been digitally enhanced by artsea photographics to improve their visual quality. Many thanks to Bob Baker for allowing the useage of these images. Bob has also recently started his own site with the photos taken during the winter months of '91, check them out at www.andreagailhistory.com. You will be able to see the difference that digital enhancement makes when these originals are placed side by side with my work

Manasquan Inlet, NJ Spring '92

In the Spring of 1992, (several months after the Andrea Gail went down) there was yet another "lively" Nor'easter. During this time period that followed the demise of the Andrea Gail, there was very active weather during the winter and spring months. I was blessed to snap a shot of this weather event from the South side of Manasquan Inlet, NJ. This happened just at the very exit of this storm and I captured a vivid image of this weather. Here is a shot that those who take photos live for! I believe its all a gift to be in the right place at the right time, as you can see in the next frame below. As I can recall from that day, there was a lot of lightning in this particular Winter Storm of 2.92 which is very likely what was recorded in the film image above.

In the Twinkling of an Eye

Remember, these photos were recorded in the early 90's. There wasnt the digital imagery around we have available today. Eventually digital imagery may equal film at the consumer level, but for now it is still limited. The right place at the right time is all that comes to mind when comparing the above images side by side. Its all a gift from above.

Click on "Contact Artsea" for information regarding ordering a print of the F/V Andrea Gail, or any of the many photos that hang in the "Photo Gallery".
